A combination of inulin and probiotics reduces stress and depression in overweight or obese subjects, while also reducing body weight and blood lipids

The aim of this randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled trial was to examine the effects of a symbiotic supplementation in overweight or obese subjects. 60 adults have been enrolled. The symbiotic supplementation consisted in 500 mg of a combination of inulin, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei and Bifidobacterium bifidum. Participants received this combination or a placebo for 8 weeks.

In comparison to placebo, the symbiotic supplementation reduced body weight (p = 0.03), as plasma total cholesterol (p = 0.01), LDL-cholesterol (p = 0.01) and triglycerides (p = 0.01). Moreover, symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression have been reduced in the supplemented group in comparison to placebo (p < 0.001, p = 0.03 and p = 0.03 respectively).

Therefore, these results demonstrate that a combination of inulin and probiotics can reduced body weight and improve the lipid profile of overweight or obese subjects, but has also a beneficial effect on stress, anxiety and depression.
