Dietary supplement for glaucoma: clinical proof

This study examined the effects of a dietary supplement (NuaDHA preparation Vision® + NuaDHA 1000) in 15 patients with open angle glaucoma and 15 healthy control subjects. The supplementation provided R-alpha-lipoic acid, taurine, vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, copper and DHA.

After 6 months of supplementation, a significant increase in plasma total antioxidant status (p = 0.028) and a reduction in malondialdehyde (p = 0.005) have been noted in glaucoma patients. Malondialdehyde also decreased in health control. Moreover, the Schirmer test, assessing lacrimation, improved by 20-30%, and subjective dry eye symptoms were reduced in the glaucoma group in comparison to the control group.

Therefore, a dietary supplement providing antioxidants, R-alpha lipoic acid and DHA appear to be effective for the management of glaucoma, probably at least through the reduction of oxidative stress.
