An oat extract has acute and chronic effects on cognitive function

This aim of this randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study was to examine the effects of Cognitaven®, a green oat extract, on cognitive function and mood during a laboratory stressor. 132 healthy adults have received 430, 860 or 1290 mg of the extract, or a placebo, for 29 days. The effects on cognitive function and mood was assessed after a single intake and after the 29-day supplementation.

Results showed that the highest dosage had a significant acute effect on cognitive performance and memory. Stronger effects were noted after 29 days in subjects receiving 430 or 1290 mg of the extract. However, there was no effect of the supplementation on mood.

Thus, the green oat extract Cognitaven® seems to be effective for improving cognitive function in healthy subjects during a laboratory stressor.
