A valerian extract to reduce headache

The effects of Sedamin®, a valerian root extract, on tension-type headache have been investigated in this randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled study. 88 participants received a placebo or 530 mg of the extract, for one month. The authors assessed the headache impact on activity of daily livings performance, headache disability, and headache severity.

Results showed that valerian reduced the impact of headache on daily livings performance in comparison to placebo (p < 0.001). There was also a reduction in headache disability (p < 0.001). Severity score has been also reduced by the valerian supplementation (p < 0.001).

In conclusion, this study shows that valerian can reduce the consequences of tension-type headache within one month.
