Probiotics for menopausal symptoms: a study on Lactobacillus acidophilus YT1

This study, randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled, has examined the effects of MENOLACTO, a dietary supplement providing 1 x 10(8) CFU/day of L. acidophilus YT1, on menopausal symptoms. It has been conducted in women (40-60 years) with menopausal symptoms and a Kupperman index (KMI) score of at least 20.

After 12 weeks of supplementation, total KMI scores has been reduced in the supplemented group in comparison to placebo. In addition, quality of life, assessed by the MENQOL questionnaire, has been improved in all four scales (physical, psychosocial, vasomotor, and sexual symptoms). No difference was noted between groups regarding hormone levels and endometrial thickness.

Therefore, probiotics, and notably L. acidophilus YT1, may be effective for reducing menopausal symptoms.
