Europe: Update of the Directive on Food Supplements

Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/418 of 9 March 2021 has amended Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements:

Modification of the unit to be used on the labelling for copper (mg instead of µg, in line with the unit of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011). This change is applicable from 30 September 2022 (Products placed on the market or labelled prior to 30 September 2022 with a unit for copper in µg may be marketed after that date until the existing stocks run out).

– Addition in Annex II of the following authorized forms of vitamins and minerals (following their authorisation as a novel food ingredient in Regulation (EU) 2017/2470):

Nicotinamide riboside chloride (source of niacine): In compliance with conditions and specifications for Nicotinamide riboside chloride set in Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 (Union list of authorized novel foods):

  • Maximum 300 mg/day for the general adult population, excluding pregnant and lactating women.
  • Maximum 230 mg/day for pregnant and lactating women.
  • Only supplied by ChromaDex Inc. until the end date of the data protection: 20 February 2025.

Magnesium citrate malate (source of magnesium): In compliance with specifications for Magnesium citrate malate set in Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 (Union list of authorized novel foods).
