Europe: Ban of titanium dioxide (E 171)

Following an EFSA opinion (6 May 2021), the Regulation (EU) 2022/63 of 14 January 2022 removed the authorisation to use titanium dioxide as food additive in foods in European Union. This ban shall enter into force on 7 February 2022. Transition period: Until 7 August 2022, foods produced in accordance with the rules applicable before 7 February 2022 may continue to be placed on the market. After that date, they may remain on the market until their date of minimum durability or ‘use by’ date.

Reminder: For France, the ban to place on the market foodstuffs containing titanium dioxide (E171) is already applicable since 1 January 2020.
